Look here for really nice-to-know facts!

Are you having problems finding information such as bed sizes, or how many triangles you get from a fat quarter?  Well - we are going publish as much as we can so this page can become your "Quilter's Encyclopedia."

It's hard to remember all the sizes of mattresses that are available.  Here are the standard measurements of mattress sizes from crib to king.  Next to those sizes are the measurements for quilts with approximately 15" drops around.
Bed Sizes
  Mattress Cover
Crib 20" x 48" 50" x 53"
Twin 29" x 75" 75" x 98"
Double 54" x 75" 83" x 106"
Queen 60" x 80" 90" x 106"
King 78" x 80" 107" x 108"

Do you look at all those fat quarters and wonder just how much you can cut from one?  Here are some calculations for various sizes of squares.

Look What You Can Get From One Fat Quarter

99 2" squares
50 2-1/2" squares
42 3" squares
30 3-1/2" squares
20 4" squares
16 4-1/2" squares
12 5" squares
12 5-1/2" squares
9 6" squares
6 6-1/2" squares
How many inches are there in fractions of yards?  Use this chart as a quick reference.

Inches per Yard

1/8 yard 4-1/2"
1/4 yard  9"
1/3 yard 12"
1/2 yard 18"
5/8 yard 22-1/2"
2/3 yard 24"
3/4 yard 27"
1 yard 36"
With the advent of rotary cutting, we frequently cut many strips.  Here's an idea of how many strips one can cut from one yard of fabric.

Strips in a Yard

Quantity Strip Width
36 1"
24 1-1/2"
18 2"
14 2-1/2"
12 3"
10 3-1/2"
9 4"
8 4-1/2"
7 5"
6 5-1/2"
6 6"

From those strips we just cut, here's how many squares of various sizes one can cut.  This is assuming your fabric is 40" wide.

Squares in a 40" Strip

Quantity Square Size   Quantity Square Size
40 1"   12 3-1/4"
32 1-1/4"   11 3-1/2"
26 1-1/2"   10 3-3/4"
22 1-3/4"   10 4"
20 2"   9 4-1/4"
17 2-1/4"   9 4-1/2"
16 2-1/2"   8 4-3/4"
14 2-3/4"   8 5"
13 3"   7 5-1/2"
